Under proposed new regulations, sunlamps would have to carry eye-catching, yellow signs with the heading: "Danger. Ultraviolet Radiation." Detailed warnings would follow in smaller print.

"Tanning is not safe, causes skin damage and can promote the development of skin cancer," says an analysis of the proposed amendments to the Radiation Emitting Devices Act.

    This set of guidelines is an adaptation of tanning salon guidelines prepared by the British Columbia Ministry of Health. We wish to thank our British Columbia counterparts on the Personal Services Establishment Committee and in the Radiation Protection Branch for the many hours of research, review and consultation they put into preparing the British Columbia Guidelines for Tanning Salon Operators.

    British government warnings and recommendations for suntan bed facilities and users
    The guidance is in two parts. The first contains general information for people who have responsibility for the day-to-day operations where UV tanning facilities are available and the second contains specific advice for customers. The information for customers takes account of current expert medical opinion and has been endorsed by the Department of Health as part of the Health of the Nation initiative.
