Wayne Rowland - Ace Canadian Medical Quack

Complaint to CHOK - 1070 radio on Wayne Rowland's appearance on the Sue Storr Talkback Show

Executive Summary

Wayne Rowland says that he is retired, but he doesn't ever say from what. He claims to have discovered the cure for Multiple Sclerosis. He has researched "strange" water and he has a "program" or "project" that he claims are beneficial to treat diabetics, cancer patients and others. He has used the media, such as CHOK, and CFPL in London to spread misinformation and lies about the efficacy of his "program".

The purpose of this complaint is to send a message to the media, and to Provincial and Federal legislators that this kind of medical quack and his friends in the media have gone too far.

Canadian and Ontario laws have obviously not done enough to protect the public from flim-flam operators. The College of Physicians and Surgeons have thus far ignored many complaints against those who practice medicine without a license. Wayne Rowland appears to be a saviour, a miracle maker, he can put 130,000 volts of kinetic electricity into a flask of water and turn it into "silver water". It can cure the world of all disease. An intestinal cleanse will get rid of the "cheese" that holds the parasitic infestation that plagues the world.

This is not funny, this is what Wayne Rowland believes, and this is what CHOK and other stations have broadcast, unedited, unchallenged, and unsupported by evidence. The media is a false messenger, and Wayne Rowland is just a small part of it.

On June 20th one of my regular quackbusting friends called me because they were very alarmed at the content and claims of a promotional tape, and marketing materials that they had received from Petrolia Magnetic Health Care. The professionally mastered tape contained a radio interview with Wayne Rowland and two of his "patients" who had breast cancer and insulin dependent diabetes mellitus.

If the tape had just been produced by PMHC, I wouldn't have been as concerned, because they, in my opinion, sell quack products, and have long been associated with snake-oil remedies, and devices. My friend was astounded that the tape originated with a Canadian owned and operated radio station that broadcasts its signal on the Internet. The station is CHOK 1070, in Sarnia, Ontario. It is part of what is left of the once powerful media empire, the Blackburn Group of companies.

We learned on June 29, 2000 that the original broadcast of the program was on April 18, 2000. The station management denies that they took any money from either Wayne Rowland, or Petrolia Magnetic Health Care for the show. They said that the show was produced because several people had called up to hear more from Wayne Rowland after he had appeared briefly on their Talkback Show earlier in the year. The host for the Talkback Show is Sue Storr.

    Dear Ron Dann:

Can you provide me with the airdates of any interviews that CHOK - 1070 has broadcast with Wayne Rowland?

    • In my opinion, he has used the Sue Storr's Talkback radio show to promote fraudulent medical treatments.
    • In my opinion, his comments go way beyond what would be normal health information.
    • In my opinion, his claims are bogus, and harmful to the public.

For CHOK - 1070 to be a part of this fraud are grounds for many complaints to regulators.

    • Were his interviews a paid advertisiment or and infomercial?
    • Were there disclaimers before, during, and after the broadcast on CHOK - 1070?
    • How many times has he appeared on your station?
    • Does your station take advertising for devices, programs, or other products for
Petrolia Magnetic Health Care Ltd, or for Wayne Rowland?

They market magnetic products, ear candles, and colloidal minerals from that location.

Wayne Rowland claims that the "programs" that he invented can cure many diseases. Those claims are false. Wayne Rowland regularly advertises on other stations, i.e. CFPL in London. He also rented a private room for three days at the Ramada Inn on Exeter Rd. in London where he saw "clients" to treat them with his "programs". As far as I am concerned, this is practicing medicine without a license.

On the radio broadcast in question on CHOK - 1070, he made outrageous claims about the ability of his "program" to treat Multiple Sclerosis, insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, breast cancer and other problems. He paraded out two patients who gave testimony as to the effectiveness of his programs.

Wayne Rowland claims to have 100% success with the treatment of MS. "We've never had a failure, EVER, and there it is!!!"

Rowland claimed that parasites inhabit the intestine and create all the problems of disease. He claimed to treat his own cancer. He claims not to make money at all from his programs because he sold them to a third party. This may be Petrolia Magnetic Health Care Ltd., the party who provided me with the tape of the broadcast.

He also recommends colloidal minerals, which can permanently injure patients. He mentions specific brand names, like N.O.W. that you can get at "strange" health food stores. He also claims to have invented "strange" water.

Sue Storr made no attempt to question Rowland about anything significant. In fact, she acted more as a cheerleader and supporter. The show ran like it was an infomercial, not a news item.

In my opinion, Wayne Roland used your radio station to promote quackery and it could possibly endanger the public.

We have filed an official complaint with the ASC, the CPSO, and with the CBSC, but all we need are the air dates to firm up our complaint.

We have also notified the local newspapers in Sarnia, London, Chatham, Windsor, and Kitchener about the broadcast.

The MS Society, the Canadian Diabetic Association, and the Canadian Cancer Society executives will also have a copy of this complaint, and they will also have a copy of the transcript of the tape.

We are making a complete transcript of the tape and will make it available around the world on our web site, so that others might respond with their opinions.

AM radio in Canada is up to its eyeballs in the business of promoting health fraud. Your station's Talkback show is another prime example of what is wrong with Canadian broadcasting today.

We would like the Minister of Health, our members of Parliament, and Queen's Park, the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council, the Solicitor General to investigate the health fraud that is being advertised and supported by radio or TV stations in Ontario.

People's lives are at stake here, and for the government to shirk their responsibility in matters of this nature is a crime in itself.

Hopefully, we will finally see some action here. We don't want anyone else to pass the buck.
