- Health Canada finally proposes big warnings on sunbeds - March 17, 2004
Health Canada is stepping in to set the record straight for Moxness and millions of other Canadians who like a tan for all seasons. Under proposed new regulations, sunlamps would have to carry eye-catching, yellow signs with the heading: "Danger. Ultraviolet Radiation." Detailed warnings would follow in smaller print.
"Tanning is not safe, causes skin damage and can promote the development of skin cancer," says an analysis of the proposed amendments to the Radiation Emitting Devices Act.

The Ontario Sun Safety Working Group (OSSWG) was formed to provide an opportunity for professionals involved in sun safety to work together to enhance sun-related activities. This set of guidelines is an adaptation of tanning salon guidelines prepared by the British Columbia Ministry of Health. We wish to thank our British Columbia counterparts on the Personal Services Establishment Committee and in the Radiation Protection Branch for the many hours of research, review and consultation they put into preparing the British Columbia Guidelines for Tanning Salon Operators.

The guidance is in two parts. The first contains general information
for people who have responsibility for the day-to-day operations where
UV tanning facilities are available and the second contains specific advice
for customers. The information for customers takes account of current expert
medical opinion and has been endorsed by the Department of Health as part
of the Health of the Nation initiative.

Ms Jowell's move is part of a campaign that she is launching on

An advisory group reviewing data on substances proposed for the federal government’s Report on Carcinogens, Ninth Edition, today recommended that ultraviolet light, whether from sunlight or an artificial source such as tanning booths and tanning beds, be listed as "known to be a human carcinogen."
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) share responsibilities in the regulation of sunlamps and tanning devices. The FDA enforces regulations that deal with labels on the devices; the FTC investigates false, misleading, and deceptive advertising claims about the devices.
